Outdoors at MOL this week

This week we had Matt from Grounds for Learning working with us. He met with parents before and after school to gather further thoughts and opinions on our playground. During break and lunch time he worked with pupils from P1-7 looking at how they use the space in the playground for play. Matt spent a large part of the day working with M.A.D (Making A Difference) Outdoors auditing the playground and looking at how it is used for learning and teaching.

After school Matt ran a staff training session to further develop our outdoor teaching skills which was informative and fun! There is a real buzz within our school about the value of outdoor learning! Some of the benefits discussed were:

+ fresh air, enhances cognitive performance

+ cross curricular, we can teach two or three subjects at once

+ healthier, pupils are moving and active

+ engagement with nature, pupils learn how to care for their environment

+ enhanced confidence and social skills

+ opportunities for creativity

+ links to raising pupil attainment

Within the next 10 days we will receive a full report which will support the school to set out detailed plans for our playground development… so watch this space!
